LONDON CELEBRATES Bank Holidays with Carnival
Once
again, the streets of Notting Hill were pumping during August
Bank Holiday. The main aim of the 37th Notting Hill Carnival was
to bring people from all cultures together and it was a two day
event. The Sunday was totally devoted to the children while Monday
was for the adults.
Historically, the Carnival started as a local event by West Indians
in 1964. They remembered the great carnivals back home and organised
a few small processions years later, millions of people travel
to west London from all over the world on the last weekend in
August for what has grown into the largest multicultural street
party in Europe.
The
Sunday and Monday Carnivals started at 11.00am and 12.00pm respectively,
ending at 7.00pm with beautiful costumers and live music. The
Carnival was officially sponsored by Western Union, which this
year celebrates 150 years of transferring money all over the world.
Many thanks to Mayor Ken Livingstone's Greater London Authority
which donated £200,000 to the Notting Hill Carnival Trust
(NHCT) last month, Chelsea Council for providing 600 stewards
and the Metropolitan Police for putting an extra thousand officers
on duty for this years event.
